Safety footwear certification

Category II and III protective footwear cannot be placed on the EU market without EU type-examination by a notified body. The manufacturer's responsibility is the documentation and maintaining conformity — ours is the impartial assessment.

Which products?

safety footwear (EN ISO 20345) — SB, S1, S1P, S2, S3 and further classes;
protective footwear (EN ISO 20346) and occupational footwear (EN ISO 20347);
footwear for welding (EN ISO 20349-2);
footwear resistant to chain saw cutting (EN ISO 17249);
firefighter footwear (EN 15090), chemical-protective footwear (EN 13832-2/-3);
overshoes — against an in-house technical specification.

The procedure

Enquiry and scope alignment: identifying the product, the target class and the applicable standard.
Technical documentation submission: with the content required by Regulation 2016/425.
EU type-examination (Module B): examination of the type sample against the standard's requirements.
Certificate: on a conforming result, issue of the EU type-examination certificate.
For Category III: ongoing surveillance under Module C2 or D.

Worth knowing

As a notified body we act impartially: the outcome of the procedure rests solely on the examination results, and we do not provide product development consultancy for a product we later certify. In the development phase, independent laboratory testing is available — a separate service, in a separate role.

Frequently asked questions

Can a manufacturer outside the EU certify with you?

Yes. The procedure runs remotely with English documentation and samples sent by courier — Regulation (EU) 2016/425 does not tie the manufacturer’s location to the EU. Our page for non-EU manufacturers covers the details.

Which standard should we certify against: EN ISO 20345, 20346 or 20347?

Safety footwear with a 200 J toecap falls under EN ISO 20345 (classes SB…S7), protective footwear with a 100 J toecap under EN ISO 20346, and occupational footwear without a toecap under EN ISO 20347. The product’s actual protective capability decides.

What do we need to get started?

A product description and target standard, technical documentation (drawings, material data, user information) and an agreed number of type samples. After your enquiry we send a documentation checklist and a sample list.
