EN 15090
Footwear for firefighters
Requirements for footwear used in firefighting and rescue: heat and flame resistance, mechanical protection and water resistance.
Current edition:
EN 15090:2012 — successor of EN 15090:2006The 2012 edition added the slip-resistance requirement, re-aligned the types to intervention risks, and changed the radiant-heat requirement.
At the review date EN 15090:2012 is harmonised under Regulation (EU) 2016/425 (since 21 April 2018) with no withdrawal date — the cited edition is also the current one. The EU Official Journal defines the status at any given time.
What does the standard require?
- Three intervention types: Type 1 — outdoor/wildland (penetration and toe protection not required); Type 2 — fire suppression and rescue (penetration protection + 200 J toecap required); Type 3 — as Type 2 plus chemical protection (all-rubber/polymeric only)
- Sole-complex heat insulation graded HI1/HI2/HI3 (150 °C, and 250 °C for 20 and 40 minutes)
- Flame and radiant-heat tests on the whole footwear; energy-absorbing seat, antistatic/electrical options
- Only higher-cut designs are permitted (the low design A of EN ISO 20345 is not)
Classes and levels: Marking: "F" + type + property letters (e.g. F2A = Type 2, antistatic), plus HI1/HI2/HI3.
