EN ISO 20345
Safety footwear
The core standard for safety footwear: requirements and test methods for footwear with 200 J toe protection. The SB, S1, S1P, S2, S3 and further classes belong here.
Current edition:
EN ISO 20345:2022 + A1:2024 — successor of EN ISO 20345:2011The 2022 generation brought a new slip-testing regime (SRA/SRB/SRC abolished; basic slip resistance became an unmarked requirement), introduced PL/PS non-metallic perforation inserts, the WPA/WR water markings, the S6/S7 waterproof classes and the SC/LG optional marks. A1:2024 is a clarification amendment (including chromium(VI) < 3 mg/kg per leather part).
At the review date EN ISO 20345:2022+A1:2024 is the harmonised edition (cited 8 October 2024, Decision (EU) 2024/2599). Key dates: the 2011 edition lost its presumption of conformity on 11 November 2024, and the A1-less 2022 edition on 8 April 2026 — new EU type-examinations must use the current edition. The EU Official Journal defines the status at any given time.
What does the standard require?
- Toecap: 200 J impact and 15 kN compression in every class; harsher thermal conditioning for non-metallic toecaps
- Slip resistance as a basic, unmarked requirement: ceramic tile + surfactant, CoF ≥ 0.31 at heel and ≥ 0.36 at forepart; optional "SR" marking with the glycerine test
- Perforation resistance: P = metal insert (4.5 mm nail), PL = non-metallic insert with 4.5 mm nail, PS = non-metallic insert with 3.0 mm nail (≥ 1,100 N)
- Water protection: WPA = upper water penetration/absorption (successor of WRU); WR = whole-footwear water resistance with zero permitted penetration
- New optional marks: LG (ladder grip) and SC (scuff-cap abrasion, 8,000 Martindale cycles)
Classes and levels: SB → S1 → S1P/S1PL/S1PS → S2 → S3/S3L/S3S → S4/S5 (all-polymeric) → S6/S7 (waterproof); Class I = leather/other, Class II = all-rubber/polymeric, plus the new hybrid class.
