Gloves against thermal risks
Gloves protecting against heat and fire: burning behaviour, contact and convective heat, radiant heat and molten metal splash.

EN 407:2020 — successor of EN 407:2004The 2020 edition split the pictogram: the flame pictogram requires at least flame-spread level 1; without a flame-spread claim a new "hot contact" pictogram applies and thermal claims cap at level 2. Domestic heat-protective gloves (oven gloves) entered the scope.
Important: at the review date the harmonised list still cites the earlier EN 407:2004 (since 21 April 2018), not the 2020 edition — presumption of conformity therefore attaches to the cited edition. The EU Official Journal defines the status at any given time.
What does the standard require?
- Six tests, one marking digit each: burning behaviour (flame spread), contact heat, convective heat, radiant heat, small molten-metal splashes, large quantities of molten metal
- Contact-heat level temperatures: level 1 = 100 °C, level 2 = 250 °C, level 3 = 350 °C, level 4 = 500 °C
- Gating rule: level 3–4 thermal claims require flame-spread level 3 minimum, otherwise the claim caps at level 2
- Mechanical prerequisite: tear resistance of at least 10 N
Marking on the product: 6 digits, e.g. 413X4X
