Welder’s gloves
Gloves for manual metal welding: combined mechanical and thermal requirements (Type A and Type B).
Current edition:
EN 12477:2001+A1:2005A1:2005 clarified the electrical requirement for arc welding (vertical resistance > 10⁵ Ω per EN 1149-2). The standard is formally under revision (prEN 12477); no new edition is published.
At the review date EN 12477:2001 with its A1:2005 amendment is harmonised under Regulation (EU) 2016/425 (since 21 April 2018). The EU Official Journal defines the status at any given time.
What does the standard require?
- Combines the EN 388 mechanical and EN 407 thermal tests, with minimum levels prescribed per type
- Type A (general welding): abrasion 2, tear 2, burning behaviour 3, small splashes 3 — more protection, less dexterity
- Type B (e.g. TIG): dexterity 4, burning behaviour 2 — more dexterity, lower thermal exposure
- For arc welding: electrical vertical resistance > 10⁵ Ω, measured after conditioning
Marking on the product: Type A or Type B
