Firefighter PPE certification
Firefighter protective equipment is Category III PPE: it protects against mortal risk, so the strictest conformity assessment procedure applies — EU type-examination plus ongoing conformity assessment under Module C2 or D.
Which products?
- firefighter footwear (EN 15090) — for firefighting and rescue operations;
- firefighter's gloves (EN 659) — with combined thermal, flame and mechanical requirements.
Why the strictest route?
Category III covers PPE against risks that can cause death or irreversible harm to health. EU type-examination (Module B) alone is not sufficient here: the manufacturer must also maintain the conformity of series production with a notified body's involvement — through supervised product checks at random intervals (Module C2) or quality assurance of the production process (Module D).
The procedure
- Enquiry: identifying the product and the applicable standard.
- Technical documentation submission per Regulation (EU) 2016/425.
- EU type-examination (Module B): assessment of the technical documentation, and examination and testing of the type sample.
- Ongoing conformity assessment: Module C2 or D, with checks or audits at least once a year — depending on the product scope, it may be provided by our partner notified body GÉPTESZT (NB 2233).

Which standard applies to firefighter footwear?
Footwear for firefighting and technical rescue falls under EN 15090, with heat and flame resistance, mechanical protection and water-resistance requirements. EU type-examination runs under Regulation (EU) 2016/425.
Can a manufacturer outside the EU certify with you?
