Validating steering-wheel leather durability

The question
Steering-wheel leather is the most intensively used leather surface in the vehicle: perspiration, UV, rubbing and temperature swings hit it at once. The question is whether the new finish keeps the surface intact and colour-stable through the whole service life — and how to prove that for approval.
Which tests answer it?
- rub and abrasion testing to the specified cycle count — dry, wet and perspiration-simulant;
- flex and crease resistance for surface cracking;
- ageing (heat, humidity), then repeating the measurements;
- colour fastness to rubbing and perspiration;
- as a complement, chemical characteristics (e.g. pH, chromium(VI)) for the supplier documentation.
