An adhesive change in production

A footwear manufacturer switches from a solvent-based adhesive to a water-based system for environmental and occupational-health reasons. Everything works on the line — but how do they know the bond will still hold in two years?

The question

A water-based adhesive often bonds as strongly as the solvent-based one when fresh — the risk is in time: it can age differently under heat, humidity and repeated flexing. So the question is not "does it stick", but does the bond hold through the product's whole life.

Which tests answer it?

  • Bond-strength (peel) measurement on samples made with the old and the new system — in direct comparison;
  • repeat measurement after ageing: does strength or failure mode change after heat and humidity exposure;
  • flex testing of the sole-to-upper joint under repeated strain;
  • where useful, comparing surface-preparation variants (same adhesive, different preparation).

What the result enables

  • approving the change on data — or finding the weak point while it is still cheap to fix;
  • objective fine-tuning of process parameters (open time, pressing);
  • a report that demonstrates to customers and suppliers alike that the change did not cost quality.
